Just Three Feet From Gold

Given the current economic roller coaster, does it feel like you are taking two steps backwards for every one step forward? Have you ever felt like quitting? Even though you knew you were on the right track?

Once a highly coveted and symbol of ultimate success, the job of CEO today has been tarnished in the public’s opinion by the news stories of corporate scandals and executive excess.

Napoleon Hill, wrote “Many successful people have found opportunities in failure and adversity that they could not recognize in more favorable circumstances.” It is through perseverance, and definiteness of purpose that the truly talented CEOs of today will identify those opportunities and reach even greater heights of success than ever imagined.

There are many people today who compare our current crisis to the Great Depression during the 20’s and 30’s that almost brought total collapse to our economic stability. Yet from the Great Depression emerged many of today’s greatest success stories. It was the leaders of that time who recognized the opportunities, seized them and reached unparalleled levels of success. Many of them credited reading the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill as the tool that gave them the inspiration and courage to keep going.

In was in 1908, when a young Napoleon Hill was commissioned by Andrew Carnegie, the richest man in the world, to embark on more than a twenty year journey studying the principles of success. His book, Think and Grow Rich, was originally published in 1937 and has since sold over 100 million copies around the world. It is widely recognized as the foremost treatise on success ever written. In researching and studying the book, Hill had the opportunity to interview the most successful titans of his time. In addition, he also interviewed people who had given up, people who had failed, in order to truly understand the elements of success in life.

Considered the grandfather of personal development and financial wisdom, Napoleon Hill was the first to coin such ageless principles as “Definiteness of Purpose,” “Pay Yourself First,” the benefits of a “Mastermind”, and even the “Law of Attraction,” which he wrote about as early as 1919.

Even though Think and Grow Rich continues to sell well today and continues to give hope and inspiration to its readers, Don Green, CEO of the Napoleon Hill Foundation recognized an opportunity to update its core principles with modern examples. Think and Grow Rich - Three Feet From Gold is the product of Don’s vision, a message of hope and motivation given life through the stories of successful companies and their leaders from today’s economic environment. You may not recognize their names, but you will recognize their companies or their brands for they put their consumers, their employees and their companies before their personal quest for fame.

Steve Forbes’ endorsement of Three Feet From Gold says it all, “The perfect message of hope and inspiration during the current economic crisis.”

The title Three Feet From Gold, actually comes from the story of R. U. Darby told in the first chapter of the original Think and Grow Rich. A young man who went west during the Gold Rush, R. U Darby was determined to discover his fortune in gold. He staked his claim, and discovered high quality ore early in his quest. With investment from family and friends, he started mining his discovery with early successand then one day the gold simply ran out. After weeks of finding no more gold, R. U. Darby grew exceedingly more frustrated and finally gave up selling his mine and equipment to the junkman in town. He returned east totally defeated and completely broke.

The junkman, on the other hand had been studying gold-mining for 20 years, and had been just waiting for this opportunity. He hired the right advisor, a gold mining engineer to study the mine and to advise him. The engineer told him that Darby had simply punched right through the vein of gold. All the junkman had to do was to go back to the beginning, to the place of the original discovery of gold, move three feet in the other direction and he would tap back into the vein. That is exactly what the junkman didand he discovered a great fortune in gold!

What happened to Darby? Well, he did hear about the junkman’s fortune and was quite upset. But he vowed to learn from his mistake and to never give up “three feet from gold” again. He went on to build a highly successful insurance business and began a new quest to teach others the importance of perseverance and never quitting.

It was this story of perseverance that led Don Green to commission Sharon Lechter and Greg S. Reid, to interview leaders from today’s business world and to ask them about their challenges. What had they done to persevere when failure loomed, to keep going when others would have given up? Armed with introductions from The Napoleon Hill Foundation, Sharon and Greg found themselves with the opportunity of a lifetime, the opportunity to update and to share the incredible impact of Hill’s work.

Told as a parable, Three Feet from Gold, shares the story of a young entrepreneur whose life is falling apart. He finds himself retracing Napoleon Hill’s steps after a serendipitous encounter with a powerful businessman who sees the young man’s potential and sets him on a challenging journey of personal, spiritual, and financial growth. Through this journey the young entrepreneur is mentored by more than 35 of today’s most successful leaders who have followed Napoleon Hill’s advice, including Dave Liniger, chairman and co-founder of Re/Max; John St. Augustine, producer of ‘Oprah and Friends’ Radio Programming; Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies; boxing champ Evander Holyfield; Symphony Orchestra conductor Jahja Ling; NASCAR President Mike Helton; just to name a few.

What unfolds in Three Feet from Gold is an invaluable equation for personal success based on advice from these incredible men and women. The Personal Success Equation is:

((Passion + Talent) x Association x Action) + Faith = Your Personal Success Equation

By combining your passion with your talent and then finding the right association you will position yourself for great success. However, to realize that success you must take decisive action and at all time have faith that you are on the right path.

They not only share how they applied this Success Equation in their own lives to achieve great success but more importantly, what they said to themselves when the chips were down. What kept them going when others would have given up. It is that moment in time, when you keep moving forward, that truly defines great success.

Their advice is sincere, generous and above all road tested by their own successful life stories.

Just a few of their golden nuggets that provide a road map for the successful CEOs of tomorrow are:

Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, Inc. said, “Focus on your people more than your profits.” And “stop overplanning.”

“A true leader will take others where they would not have gone by themselves,” was the advice of Drayton McLane, Jr. owner of the Houston Astros.

Debbie Fields said, “Good enough, never is.”

John St. Augustine said, “People need to replace their wishbone with a backbone.”

James Amos said, “The margin between success and failure is a very thin line. History is the past. Base decisions on the future.”

John Hope Bryant said, “Ten percent of your attitude is determined by what life hands you and ninety percent by how you choose to respond.”

And returning to the ageless wisdom of Napoleon Hill, “Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.”

Don’t quit, you are just three feet from gold!

Changing Reading Habits With Amazon

Amazon is the largest bookseller in the world. It is also America’s biggest online retailer. Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, the company now has separate websites in the UK, France, Germany, Canada and China. It is, in short, a very successful business.

It’s easy to forget, given Amazon’s current level of success, exactly what a radical idea buying books on the internet and then having them delivered by post was back in 1994. Many business analysts and investors predicted trouble, if not outright failure, for Amazon during its early years. It wasn’t until the back end of 2001 that Amazon finally turned its first profit.

Having revolutionised the manner in which many people bought books, Amazon very quickly grew their portfolio by the addition of video, music CDs, toys and games and computer software. There are very few consumer items that can’t be found on Amazon today. You can even do your grocery shopping with them if you like.

Although Amazon now have an enormous range of products on offer, there is still a very strong association with books. The company is clearly very passionate about books - so when the original Kindle e-book reader was launched in November of 2007, it was immediately obvious that this was the ideal product for Amazon - it fitted right in with their business model.

It’s also easy to forget that the Kindle wasn’t the first e-book reader - not by a long way. Franklin’s eBookman had been released a decade earlier in 1999. The Sony PRS also stole a march on the Kindle when it launched in 2006. However, Amazon don’t seem to have suffered very much as a result of their tardiness. Thanks to their link with books, public awareness and trust in the Amazon brand, combined with the fact that there was a large, and ever expanding, selection of Kindle books and Kindle accessories to choose from, the Kindle rapidly overtook its competitors. In February of 2009 the improved and enhanced Kindle 2.0 was launched, rapidly followed by the large format DX model, and Amazon’s leading position solidified even more. The Kindle quickly became Amazon’s best selling product and, during the Christmas period of 2009, the Kindle became the “most gifted” Amazon product ever.

Today, although the Kindle is still very much the number one e-book reader on the market, competition is really hotting up. Other e-book readers with color screens exist, some have touch screen controls. After just a few short months the Kindle, as a piece of hardware, may be becoming slightly dated. However, to analyse the e-book reader market purely in terms of hardware specification would be to miss the point a little.

Amazon, more than any of its competitors, knows exactly what people who read large amounts of books - its target market and best customers - want and value. That’s why Amazon’s dominance of the e-book reader market is likely to continue for some time to come.

Discover the Amazon Kindle and view the wide range of Kindle accessories available to help you customise and protect your reader.

Set Your Inner Author Free

It’s amazing. As of today I’ve been writing books for 30+ years, and selling them online for nearly 15 years, and previously only in print through selling foreign licenses, or printing them myself, advertising them, and selling them either online or in classes I taught.

There is a better way. If you have something you want to say, you can put it in print, or sell it online and there is no difficult about doing that. If you don’t know where to start, there are writing coaches that can give you a hand by discussing topics, subjects, and what you are passionate about.

Beyond that, tell a provider of services what you want to say, and they’ll write it for you. There is a little company we know of that does that for English writers, www.lifeimprovementbooks.com. And another for Spanish writers, www.ipublicidades.com . And they have done work for several authors around the world for several years. They have a team of writers in English, Spanish, and French that can help you tell your story. Many companies exist to help beginning authors, and the ones that help that most are the ones who ‘draw out’ what you want to tell your readers.

If you’ve already created a draft of your book, you are more than 50% there. The next step involves editing, proofreading, refining, and creating a proper layout for book printing or putting it online or on Kindle.

With these professional services type of company, the layout of a book is relatively inexpensive, takes only a few days, and can be delivered ready to print to the printer of your choice. Don’t know which printer to use? Or, only need a few copies, or just one copy of a special book for a friend - not a problem. Don’t know what size to print. Here’s a general rule of thumb: Workbooks for workshops, A4 or 8.5″ x 11″, Executive paperback of technical value 7″ x 10″, Highest Quality Paperback for Self-Help or Fiction 6″x9″, Mass market paperback 5.5″ x 8.5″ or smaller. And yes, you can get ONE copy printed.

In today’s industry of book publishing, if you need a private edition for your family tree and history for 10 members - not a problem. If you are going to teach a private class to 4 students and you need a 500 page manual - not a problem. If you want to sell one book at a time from your website, to a person interested in it in Timbuktu - not a problem.

And if you want your book on Amazon.com for sale - or Amazon Kindle books - also not a problem. The world is changing and the book printing and distribution industry as well. And if you just want one copy for the world to remember you by, just sign it and put it in your time capsule - not a problem.

From writing, to editing, proofing, translating, typesetting, printing books, distributing online, or through Amazon - the world has changed. And the author inside of your that may have been restricted by past technological restrictions has been, at last, set free to share his or her wisdom with the rest of the world, one copy at a time.

Become an author - easily without stress. Fast and easy,, one printed book or a million, online or on Amazon. Release the inner author inside you!

Book Promotion And Publicity - What Are My Options?

There are many book titles that you see on the shelves of bookstores and in libraries. They may have some of the best information, or tell the best stories that have ever been written. However, if the author was not marketed by a well known publisher or did not have the tools and ideas to show that book promotion and publicity market your book.

With the many online companies that will help you self-publish, once completed, the tasks of promotion and publicity fall into your hands. Depending on the topic, you will be able to find many local options to get your book and your face in front of a potential buying audience. However, be aware of many companies online that claim that they can help you. They will offer you online seminars on the proper procedures and techniques to get your book out to the public. Just be careful as if you published this piece yourself, you may have budget constraints and all of this can cost you quite a lot of money. What they will attempt to show you, in many cases, is the use of common sense. You will be exposed to marketers that are more interested in selling you stuff, more than they are interested in helping you sell your book, or at least make people aware that you wrote something of value. So, beware.

Listen to the radio in your local market. You will likely find at least one station that has some talk show host that discusses similar topics as what you have written about. In every case, these hosts are always interested in having entertaining guests on their shows. It helps them develop a larger audience and you will get some good exposure. They are easy to contact and if you are local and have a good story to tell, they will love having you on their program.

Depending on the topic, there will likely be a local radio station that covers a similar topic. They are always looking for interesting guests and topics that may make their listeners more interested. Listen to your local stations and find someone that is normally discussing a topic at least somewhat similar to what you written. Give them a call or send them an email with a biography of you and the book. You will likely hear back from them and you may be on your way. If the topic is more mainstream, use the same process to your local television stations. Again, with the plethora of local programming, you may be able to get a slot on a local morning show or again, a show discussing similar topics.

Head down to your local bookstore. Everyone likes to sponsor an event. A book signing falls into this category. In some cases they may let you have a short discussion group explaining the topic and then have the opportunity to sign and sell some copies. It is possible that they will let you put up some posters and advertise your upcoming visit, so be sure to plan ahead. The idea of having a local author is usually good press, so you should contact all of the local newspapers as well.

Local Networking meetings can be a great place to promote your book. Most of the people there are self employed and have an interest in supporting others in the same field. Be sure to have fliers and business cards to pass out and be sure to speak with everyone there. You may find someone that has contacts with the media, which can also help you get to the larger audiences.

All of these ideas necessitate you having a personality! The more of you that you can show in your interviews, personal meetings and book signings, the more people will relate to you and your book. If you do not think that you are capable of handling these ideas, knowing that if they work in one city they will do the same in others, you can revert to a more passive marketing approach. The Internet is the largest marketing opportunity on the planet. However, by creating a blog or launching a website can be costly and time consuming. This is not to say that this is a bad thing to do, but even if you create a wonderful site, but you do not know how to market it, you and your book will likely spend eternity in cyberspace with very few sales.

Lastly, there are companies that will try to help you. The problem here is that they are interested in selling stuff, too. They will offer books and seminars that are designed to help you market your book. Your challenge is to determine how interested they are in helping you or selling you their stuff. In most cases, you can take your product to the public with an entertaining approach. Be yourself and market that. If what you wrote about has any appeal, you can find people that will buy your book. Just make sure that you are prepared, professional and personal. Good luck.
