Realize your Dreams with an Ecommerce Storefront

If asked what your biggest dreams are for this year, what would you say? Most people have goals that revolve around spending more time with their families, less time at work and yet having the financial freedom to enjoy their lives. The solution that many are finding works for them is to work from home. If you want to make a real move forward in this direction in the year to come, consider setting up an ecommerce storefront. Don’t wait until more time has passed; your dreams are never something that should be put on hold.

The first thing that you’ll need to do to set up an ecommerce storefront is to figure out what it is that you want to sell from your own home. You want to be able to meet two goals here. First, you want to make sure that you are selling something that interests you. Secondly, you want to make sure that you’ve got a moneymaking idea on your hands. After all, it’s great to do something that you’re passionate about. But the reality is that to make it work, you need to make money at it.

Many people look to their hobbies to get ideas for a business and end up designing their business around things like scrapbooking supplies, photography accessories or clothing. Brainstorm a list of your favorite things and then consider what related businesses could be made from those interests. Next, make sure that you have a moneymaking idea. To do this, you’ll want to research your online competition. Figure out a plan that sets your site apart from the others. This helps to guarantee your financial success.

Once you have a business in mind, setting up the Ecommerce storefront should be relatively easy. You can use ecommerce software to assist you in putting your own creative ideas to use on the site. Alternatively, you can work with a business that will assist you in the design. Make sure that the site you set up is easy to navigate and friendly on your reader’s eyes. A good design can often make the difference between a good business and one that fails. You want yours to work.

Once the site is up and running, you will want to give it your serious attention. If you’re going to be doing this part-time while still working, figure out a set schedule after your normal work hours to commit to the job. If you’re going for the gold and planning to run your home business full time, make sure that you’re at the desk from nine to five every weekday to make this thing work. A good site will only get you so far; a good business is going to have to do the rest.

If you run it properly, the home business can be a terrific way to meet all of the goals that you’d like to see met this year. Working from home, you will be able to spend more time with your family. This is especially true if you get everyone involved in some aspect of the home business. Even kids can participate in some way if you get creative about the process. And if you set up an Internet business that sells something that you care about, you won’t feel like you’re working too much even when you’re putting in a lot of hours.

Will your Ecommerce storefront make you rich? It may or may not bring you financial success. If you work hard at it, it should be able to provide you with the income that you need to manage your life. But more importantly, it will make you rich in opportunities. You will be able to do the things that you love with the people that you love. There’s no value that can be placed on the realizing of that dream.

Great Ways to Cut the Cost of Starting Your Franchise Business

One of the reasons a franchise business has such a high potential for success is because of all that’s included in the initial cost. In some cases, the start-up cost is the same (or very close) to building a business from scratch but without all the benefits such as established name recognition, target market research and existing publicity campaigns. With so many advantages, it can be difficult to understand why entrepreneurs choose to launch a business alone. Nevertheless, some of the high costs associated with franchises can become a deterrent for prospective buyers. What many of them don’t realize is that there are several options that help cut the cost.

Options for Financing Your Franchise

Many franchise opportunities come with a sizeable price tag. Few prospective business owners can afford to make such an investment without some financial assistance. Unfortunately, not all of them will have access to the necessary capital it will take to satisfy start-up costs, franchise fees, royalty fees and a loss in revenue that will continue until the return on investment finally begins. If you have a well-established credit history (free of bankruptcies and established to the point where you’re considered as having enough credit), you may be able to get a conventional loan through a bank or credit union.

However, banks are typically reluctant when lending to small businesses. In reality, they rarely do so. Though not everyone will qualify for conventional loans, there are still options. If you have applied for credit to no avail, you can contact the Small Business Administration, an agency run by the federal government. The SBA guarantees a certain percentage of its loans, which puts lenders at ease because they are less likely to experience a loss. Plus, the SBA is usually willing to lend for longer periods of time and at larger amounts.

Of course, the SBA has specific criteria to determine eligibility. First, it must be a small business, which translates to less than $13.5 million in retail or service sales. Additionally, it must be located in the United States or a U.S. governed territory and only those interested in opening a for-profit business can apply. As you can imagine, this agency reviews countless applications, which means that you must handle yourself in a very professional manner. It is always a good idea to have your business plan ready before meeting with anyone regarding financial assistance, even a government agency.

However, the main disadvantage to getting an SBA loan is that the interest rate is set by the Treasury Department, which means that it is variable. Moreover, this interest rate is generally higher than those offered by conventional loans. Thus, if you can find a close friend or family member who is able and willing to lend you the necessary funds or even cosign, this is your best option next to financing on your own through a bank.

Economic Development Corporations

The federal government is not the only entity that provides monetary assistance to potential franchise owners. More and more state and county governments are pitching in with tax exemptions and other special programs. The New York City EDC, for instance, issues low-cost tax exempt bonds as well as double and triple tax exempt revenue bonds (these are technically issued by the New York City Industrial Development Agency, NYCIDA, an entity of the NYCEDC). Furthermore, this agency can even administer public loans. The only issue to consider before accepting assistance from an EDC is the fact that much of the available funding is dedicated to improving low-income or developing areas. Nonetheless, EDCs have funds available to prospective business owners like you. And, you have the opportunity to impact a struggling community. Still, before you decide to locate your franchise in such a community, make sure it is conducive to operating a profitable company.

Community Development Corporations

These non-profit organizations are dedicated to improving their local economies by lending money to small businesses. The goal here is to increase revenue and bring new jobs to the area. What’s more, CDCs are well known for developing affordable housing and improving education for residents in low-income areas. Once again, you must weigh the costs and benefits to starting a business in developing or otherwise lower income sections of a town or city.

Business Development Corporations and Venture Capitalists

If you’re weary of relying on public funding, you have the option of appealing to a business development corporation or venture capitalist in your territory. Returning once again to New York, its business development corporation is made up of financial institutions that pool their resources in order to lessen the risk. Rather than focusing on low-income sections of the state, this organization is devoted to helping all kinds of different businesses gain access to financing. The primary concern is to expand New York State in general.

Venture capitalists, on the other hand, are different from development corporations because they assume some ownership of your business. Because of this unique feature, they are willing to take more risks than traditional lending institutions. Depending on your specific industry and the stage of your business’s development, you may be able to find a venture capitalist fund to help finance your business.

Take Your Time

While there are opportunities for financing your franchise business and dramatically reducing your initial cost, keep in mind that some franchisees use their own resources for as much as 50 percent of their start-up expense. If you can not afford that kind of investment, consider working for a couple of years and saving some of the money for yourself. If you’re able to generate some revenue this way, you are more likely to qualify for a conventional loan. Otherwise, you will appear more serious to business development corporations and reputable venture capitalists. Thus, if you decide to wait after all, don’t become discouraged. Instead, use the extra time to conduct additional research and perfect your business plan. Sooner than you realize, investors will be eager to take part in your project.

How to lower your SERP with external links

So you understand the importance of gaining inbound links for your web site, and you’ve set out to get your link placed in all the directories you can. Great, but before you start, think carefully about the link you are going to submit. Are you about to LOWER your search engine ranking by placing all your keywords on someone else’s site?

When submitting links, there are 3 basic bits of information that are required: the URL, the Anchor Text, and the Description. The URL is pretty obvious. This need to be either the address of your site (http://www.after5webdesign.com for example) or the address of a page in your site (http://www.after5webdesign.com/directory/index.php for example). A link to a page other than your main index page is called a “deep link”. These are very good, but not all directories allow deep linking. Your Anchor Text is all the text between the A tags. For example, in the link {a href=”http://www.after5webdesign.com”}My Web Site{/a}, “My Web Site” is the anchor text. The description is the bit of un-linked text that is before or after the link.

Now let’s take a general look at how a page is ranked. First, a spider grabs all the text in the html document and this text is subjected to word commonality algorithms. Common words like “the”, “a”, and “and” are ignored, but other words are counted and totaled. For example, this article uses the words “link” about 21 times, “submit” 6 times, and the phrase “search engine” 5 times. Therefore it would be a safe bet for a computer to assume this article is about submitting links and/or search engines. Thus when someone searches for the phrase “submitting links for search engines” this article could be one of the results. On the other hand, because of my examples, this page uses the word “prom” 15 times, search engines will likely determine this is also a valid result for that search term.

Another factor that comes into play is what other websites say your page is about. If you’ve viewed a cached Google search result and seen the phrase “These terms only appear in links pointing to this page:”, that means that the anchor text on other sites contain that term, but that term doesn’t actually contain the term. Another example of this in action can be seen by searching Google for the term “Liar”. What’s the first result? A biography of Tony Blair! This is because several pages have pointed a link to his biography and used “Liar” as the anchor text. Because the term liar appears in the links anchor text so frequently, Google assumes the page must be about “Liar”.

Let’s look at an example of how to shoot yourself in the foot with link submissions. Suppose you have a website selling prom dresses, and you submit your link to a directory using “My Prom Dress Store” as the anchor text and “Prom dress, prom tips, prom ideas, what to wear at prom, prom music, prom night, prom, prom date, prom dresses, prom planning” for the description. You have done well with the anchor text, because you used your “prom” and “dress” keyterms in the anchor text, but you then proceeded to add your “Prom” keyword to the page another 10 times. This directory page will now have at least 11 occurances of YOUR keyword, and only one of them is used to point to your site! Further, the directory will likely have several other sites listed in your category which will means even more occurances of your keyword. Congratulations, you’ve just helped the directory rank better for your keyterms, and since their site contains links to other sites, you’ve also helped your competition.

Can’t Write Articles For Links? Write code!

If you’ve subscribed to an seo newsletter for longer than a week, you’re well aware that writing articles with tips and advice pertaining to your website’s subject is a great way to generate links and traffic. But what if you can’t write or are afraid to write? Well, if you can write software, you’re still in luck! In this article I’ll show you a trick that can still garner you hundreds of links and won’t require you know the difference between adjectives and adverbs.

I’ll use my own little website as an example (I freely admit that I am neither a web designer nor a programmer). My wife and I own By Request DJ & Karaoke Company. Obviously, we specialize in weddings dances, school dances, company parties, and karaoke. We recently went through the process of converting all our CDs to compressed digital audio files which are played from a computer rather than hauling around thousands of CDs. In the process of ripping and encoding our music, I found many tasks were very repetitive and time consuming. Since I know a smattering of Visual Basic, it was simple to write a utility to automate these tasks. I figured that if it was helpful to me, some other DJ might find it helpful to, so I called my utility MP3G to ZIP and made it available for download from my website. I also decided to submit it to a few freeware sites just so it was easier to find.

What happened amazed me. Many of the links to my website from these freeware directories began showing up in Google. Given the name of my company and the descriptions of my freeware apps, this helped boost my site for some very competitive keywords. I decided to submit my software to a few more directories, and that’s when I found two very handy tools: PAD files and RoboSoft.

A PAD file is a “Portable Application Description, and it helps authors provide product descriptions and specifications to online sources in a standard way, using a standard data format that will allow webmasters and program librarians to automate program listings.” It takes the tedium out of submitting your software to hundreds of sites by enabling you to enter the URL to your software information rather than retyping all the information for every submission. It was created by the Association of Shareware Professionals (http://www.asp-shareware.org/pad) and is a free utility.

RoboSoft (http://rudenko.com/robosoft) is a semi-automated software submission utility that contains a list of known freeware and shareware directories that accept submissions. It is only semi-autonomous because it won’t push the buttons for you, but it will fill in the blanks. This still allows you to quickly enter your software’s information to hundreds of websites. Websites who will all link back to your website and most often don’t require a reciprocal link. The RoboSoft database currently lists 420 freeware and shareware directories.

In the two months I have been using these tools I have seen my traffic jump from 800 unique visits per month to over 5000, and the link popularity of the page that has my two freeware apps has gone from 7 to 639 according to widexl.com. While these are small numbers for someone like cnn.com, sprint.com, or even napster.com, they are huge for a small site like mine. Plus, they are beginning to get me links from my fellow DJs who have used and appreciated my tools. I’m certain that they will eventually lead to good things.

So, while it isn’t a tactic that will make you number for “best website”, it will get you a few more links. And it won’t require you to submit any articles with tips about marketing your website.
